The mechanisms underlying the relationship between firms' digitalization transformations and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosure remain underexplored. Utilizing a sample of Chinese listed firms from 2011 to 2021, this research investigates the mechanisms by which digitalization affects firms' ESG disclosures. Our findings are as follows: (i) Digitalization transformation effectively promotes firms' ESG disclosure levels. (ii) Digital transformation enhances firms' ESG disclosure levels through improved internal control and green innovation. (iii) The positive effects of digital transformation on ESG disclosure levels are more pronounced in non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs), in the manufacturing and high-tech industries, and in firms with lower financing constraints, a lower ratio of independent directors, a more positive government attitude towards industrial policy, and higher analyst coverage. (iv) The tertiary education diversity of board members negatively moderates the impact of digital transformation on ESG disclosure levels, and the professional expertise diversity of board members similarly negatively moderates the relationship between digital transformation and ESG disclosure levels. Our research contributes to a deeper understanding of the nuanced mechanisms that underlie the positive relationship between firms' digital transformation and their ESG disclosure levels.
